The offside rule, what is it? Offside penalty rule in football

What is Offside? This is an infraction we often hear about when watching football win tips matches. So, what exactly is the concept of offside? When do these infractions occur and how are they regulated by the law? Follow the article below to understand more!

What is Offside?

What is Offside? Offside is when a player is positioned beyond the opponent's last defender and the ball, and it's a common infraction in football. Many people often misinterpret offside as "liệt vị," but this is not the correct term.

The offside rule is covered under Law 11 Decision No. 982-QĐ/UBTDTT. An offside situation is determined when a player is nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.

A player is not offside when they are in their own half of the field or level with the second-last opponent and the last two opponents of the opponent.

A simpler understanding is that any part of the player's head, body, or feet is closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent (excluding the arms), it is considered an offside position.

The offside rule is also part of Section XI of the FIFA Laws of the Game. It's one of the most difficult infractions to explain and enforce accurately in football. The content of this law focuses on elements related to fair play.

Examples include interfering with play by touching the ball passed or touched by a teammate, or interfering with an opponent by preventing them from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing their line of vision, movements, or gestures. According to the referee's perspective, this could be seen as deceiving or distracting the opponent.

This is a violation that limits the attacking team's ability to gain an advantage by waiting for the ball when only the opponent's goalkeeper or their last defender is between the opponent's player and the goal.

This law also aims to ensure the continuity and fair play of each match, promote tactical development, and increase the diversity of football playing styles.

Punishment for Offside Violation

All instances of offside violations will be penalized. The assistant referee is responsible for detecting offside infractions and will signal with a flag to make decisions on penalizing these offenses. If a player commits an offside offense, the opposing team will be awarded an indirect free kick at the location of the infraction.

In the event of an offside infraction but the player still manages to score against the opposing team, the goal will not be counted. Subsequently, the goalkeeper or a player from the opposing team has the right to take a goal kick.

How is the Offside Rule Defined?

According to FIFA regulations, the offside rule is applied when a player is in an offside position when the ball is passed to the opposing half of the field and there are no opponents obstructing the way.

However, if a player is in an offside position, it cannot be considered an offense. Because in that case, the player may unexpectedly find themselves in an offside position but may not realize it and are still attempting to play on. This is referred to as "active involvement."

When a player is offside, the assistant referee will raise the flag to confirm the infraction. At that point, the referee on the field will blow the whistle to stop play and decide whether the opposing team will be awarded a free kick or not.

Breaking the Offside Trap

Breaking the offside trap is one of the most important skills in football. Breaking the trap is considered successful if the attacking player stands higher up the field than the defending opponent compared to the goal line.

When a teammate begins to pass the ball, the attacking player immediately uses their speed to get ahead of the defender to receive the pass and score. Successfully breaking the offside trap can bring many benefits, but the forward must be intelligent and quick-thinking. There are two common ways to break the offside trap:

Method 1: The attacker must position themselves in front of the opposing defender compared to the goal line. Before the teammate passes the ball, the attacker must be alert and quickly observe the situation. If the teammate just passes the ball, the attacker must promptly move past the defender to receive the ball and score.

Method 2: If an attacking player realizes they are offside and their teammate passes the ball from a close distance, the attacking player does not receive the ball but signals for another teammate to continue running down and take the shot. This is one of the most effective ways to break the offside trap efficiently today.
